Update No 8

28 September 2008

Happy new government!

I was out of SA for one week! I get back, and all hell as broken loose:

  1. The president has been sacked
  2. Half the cabinet has stepped down
  3. The Blue Bulls are no longer on top of the Currie Cup log

That’s the last time I leave you guys alone to ‘look after’ things while I’m out!

(Actually, the fact that Manto is gone is the best news ever – I met her last year and I have to say that she is on a different planet.  After she stole her liver (transplant), the rate of organ donation in South Africa dropped by 78% because no-one trusts that their organs will be given to a patient that really needs it – true story)

Anyhow, it is great to be back, and can I say that it is a miracle that such huge changes have taken place in our government with hardly a blip on the radar.

There is no other country in Africa that has ever gone through what we did last week where there was no bloodshed.

It says something for the future of South Africa.

Enough about that though – let’s focus on the reunion detail and getting in contact with all 1989 Glen High Matrics.

We have over 70 respondees so far (and counting), so please keep getting hold of those that have not responded yet.

If this is your first visit to this site, you need to complete the contact list form.

So, as mentioned in my last update, I have started adding some information about our respondees, and posting it as a link to their names on the full 1989 list.  If you were one of the lucky few to receive an email from me requesting the information, I trust that you have completed it and included a few photos too.

There is also quite a nice group on Face Book called the The Glen High Class of 89.  I think that most of the respondees are already members of this group, but if not, check it out and post a comment or two.

(Here is the Link – but make sure you come back here to read further)

Update No. 9

05 October 2008

Howzit.

If the voting for the month is anything to go by, then we have just about one year to go before our official 20 year reunion.

The respondees list has slowed to 70.  Not a bad effort, but in the last week and a half, only one new member joined. This is a little concerning as our average up to now has been 10 new members per week.

I am still committed to getting as many of the 1989 Glen High Matrics to respond to the site, and I trust that you will assist in doing so.

Please go through the full 1989 list and check if you have contact with any of the non-respondees; if so, get them on the site so I can keep up the contact list data base.

You may recall a few weeks back, I estimated that together, the 1989 matrics have produced in the region of 400 children (based on the 1.6 birth-rate of respondees).  If we had the reunion today, and 80% of the current respondees attended with their families, there would be 210 people at the reunion.

If you are a regular visitor to the site, please make it your goal to get at least two new respondees this week.  And if this is your first visit, please complete the contact list form.

A big thank-you to everyone who responded to the snap shot effort, I have received a lot of positive feedback about this.  If you go to the full 1989 list, you’ll see that some names have a ‘link’ which takes you to a snap shot of what these guys have been up to – as well as a photo or two.

Keep checking in as I add more snap shots (and photos) to the list.

Send us a message on the messsage board or post a remember when story.

I’m off

Lekker week and all

Update 10

12 October 2008

Hello Everyone!

I really glad to see that the web counter on this page keeps ticking over which tells me that there is still quite a lot of interest and activity around our reunion as well as keeping in touch with old school buddies.

From my side, it is great to be making contact with so many of the old crew.  Even with folks that I hardly knew at school, there is so much to chat about.

I’ve been chatting to some of the 89ers who have left South Africa and set up their lives on distant shores, but who are so keen to keep in touch with what is happening ‘back home’.

So, I have had one of the weirdest months in my life – no joking. Apart from some hectic travel over the passed month, I have been struggling with this flu that so many of you may know well – the one that just doesn’t go away.

Anyway, on Thursday morning, I’m in a hotel room in Germany when I feel the need to cough.  I decide to give it a good go (because I’m so gatvol of it).  I take a deep breath and launch into one of those ‘clean it out’ coughs.

The next thing I know, I’m lying on the ground, clutching my side and reeling in pain.

I eventually recovered and got through the day in a fair amount of pain.  When I arrived back in South Africa on Friday, I decided to stop by the hospital (I thought I must have pulled a muscle or torn something).

After a set of x-rays, I was duly informed that I had broken a rib!

FROM A COUGH !!!

If you can think of a morel to this story, please let me know, because I sure can’t.  The only thing I can tell you is please try to avoid this – it is not pleasant, trust me.

OK, so before I carry on, let me get the usual rhetoric out of the way:

If this is your first visit to the site, please complete the contact list form – it is my way of creating a database of contacts so that I can keep everyone informed of developments related to the 20 year reunion which will be held some time in 2009.

You will see the full list of respondees on this page – try to find your old school buddies.

If you have been here before, it is your duty to go through the full 1989 list and identify those that have not responded.  Get them to log onto this site and complete the contact list form.

And, if you would be so kind to send us a message on the message board or post a ‘remember when’ story please.

OK, where was I – Oh yes, don’t cough in a hotel room.

Here is another stats update:

Respondees still in South Africa:                        55%

Respondees in the USA:                                   14%

Respondees in the UK:                                     16%

Respondees in Australia / NZ:                           1%

(Surprising that so few have ended up in Oz – or not.)

Ok, so I’m around for a while. I’ll be chasing everyone again for the ‘snap shot’ information as well as some photos to post on the site.

The snap shot info can be found by clicking on one of the names in the full 1989 list which has a link on it.

If you would like me to include your snap shot on the site, please pop me an email with similar information on it – I’ll be glad to post it, please also include a photo or two.

That’s it for now, Oh yes, one more thing… let’s be careful out there!

Update No 11

18 October 2008

Dear All.

First time visitor to the site?  PLEASE CLICK HERE

What a great week in terms of responses.  Since the last update, 9 new 89ERS have joined.  A really big thank you to those who put out the word (Jason, Mark, Janine, etc)

Now, I know that a fair number of you have moved away from Pretoria (and South Africa), but the point is that everyone at the Glen spent a fair amount of their time in Pretoria and by default have to be supporters of the Blue Bulls.

I only raise this point because we are one week away from the Currie Cup Final – Bulls vs Sharks in Durban next Saturday.

It’s going to be a classic, and as Blue Bulls supporters we are all confident that the result will be the same as the 2007 Super 14 final (also played in Durban between these two teams)

For anyone that has trouble in remembering the outcome of this epic battle, please take the time to visit the following page:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRjCmB7hfew

Some more news on 89ERS is that only two of us ended up in Australia (so far).  Nobody’s perfect, but it sounds as if they are doing well for themselves.  It’s a little surprising that only two out of 80 (or 2.5%) have ended up ‘down-under’, mate.  However, I think I might just have the reason for this low number …

(Turn the volume up and get the tissues out!)

Not sure if anyone is interested in the ‘RIB’ update . . .

Didn’t think so.

One more message to our overseas based 89ERS – you’ll be aware of the fact that the global economy is in the toilet.  However, the one good thing for all of you earning foreign currency is that the value of the South African Rand has dropped so far that you can’t measure it – you have to dig for it.

This means that any visit to South Africa (i.e. the reunion) will be a lot more affordable for y’all – GO WALL STREET!

And talking reunion, I would like to form a small committee of 89ERS (3 or 4 locals) to assist in the planning and organizing of this event.  We do still have quite a lot of time before next year (and a long way to go in terms of getting as many people to respond to this site), but if there are any of you that would like to assist, please pop me a mail to discuss this.

As I mentioned before, the main aim will be to make the reunion one of the most memorable ones ever.

I’m also in the process of adding the matric school photos to as a link to each of the respondees.  This does take some time, so please bear with me.

Please also keep sending me your photos (I’m sure that matric dance photos will go down well – all those ‘funky’ 80’s outfits)

Other comments are that the ‘remember when’ page is a great read – the problem is that no-one is posting anything on the page.  If you have a story, please post it (even anonymously).

And finally, I have added some new content under the fun stuff page.  Since starting the site, I’ve been receiving so many ‘joke/junk’ emails from fellow 89ERS – some of them so classic that it’s a shame to delete them.

Please feel free to send me your mails, but please take it easy on the ‘meg size’ – this is Africa you know.

Have a fantastic week, join the Facebook Class of 89 Group, and we’ll chat soon.
